It’s important for kids to know that skills they have are valued in the acting business and can be used on their resume. They should be aware that a casting director might be looking for someone who can horseback ride, or jump rope, skateboard, or tell jokes. It’s good to talk about skills students might not know they have because they don’t see it as a skill. A kid might not know that riding their skateboard to school every day could be listed as a skill. You can be hired for that.
Let’s say a kid does have a skill they can bring into the classroom, like playing the guitar or singing. We may incorporate it in a scene so that they can get comfortable doing it in front of a group of people. They could come in and perform in front of everyone, so that the first time they do it in front of people it’s not at an audition. If kids like to dance, maybe we could incorporate that in some of our exercises. Mainly, it’s important that they know that the things they do can be utilized.
